Why buy kiln dried logs?
Kiln dried logs – as you’d imagine – have been heated in a kiln to drive the moisture out of them. They are dried to below 20% moisture content, for an optimal burn. A recently-felled tree can contain as much as 60% moisture, depending on the tree species. This means a 1kg log could contain as much as 500-600ml of water – which your stove will have to burn off, reducing the usable heat to your home.
Look for the ‘Ready to Burn’ logo when you’re buying firewood – this ensures a moisture content of 20% or less. It might be tempting to opt for cheaper firewood, but logs with a high moisture content will struggle to burn and may even damage your stove. This is due to tars and creosotes generated when burning wet wood. Additionally, these tars and creosotes will increase the need for maintenance on your stove, increasing costs.
In short, kiln dried logs maximise the efficiency of your stove, reduce air pollution and prevent damage to your stove and chimney.
