Could wood burning stoves offer better energy security for your household this winter?

Rising energy costs have become a regular fixture in the news, with energy bills reported to increase again in October1. With so much uncertainty regarding energy costs and availability, many are looking for ways to become less reliant on gas and electric to heat their homes.

Not only this, but with rising concerns over fossil fuels and carbon emissions, there is growing demand for clean, sustainable heating. As we move from summer into the autumn and winter months, there’s never been a better time to invest in a log burner.

Wood Burning Stoves – Can they save you money?

A 2022 study by Gemserve shows potential savings households with gas central heating could make by burning wood2.

Their results saw an average £131 annual drop in energy bills when a wood burner was used for 3 hour periods over winter evenings, with the central heating turned down to 18oC. This represents a saving of 8.5% on energy costs. Projections suggest further energy price increases in 20233, making this saving even more valuable.

Additionally, the UK Government’s ‘reasonable worst-case scenario’ suggests the possibility of blackouts in January4. Erica Malkin, representing the Stove Industry Alliance, emphasised the benefit of wood burning stoves; ‘A wood-burning stove is completely independent of anything. You would not be without heat if there was to be this situation.’5

As such, a wood burning stove offers a number of advantages for your home. Not only can you benefit from reduced energy costs, but an ‘off-grid’ heating solution. Enjoy greater control over your energy usage and how you heat your home.

Efficient Wood Burning with EcoDesign Stoves

EcoDesign is a regulation for solid fuel space heating appliances, which came into effect on January 1st 2022.

Stoves compliant with EcoDesign must pass stringent efficiency tests, as well as checks to monitor particulate and gas outputs.

This improved efficiency means you get more usable heat for your space from each log you burn.

Wood burning also gives you a tangible idea of how much fuel you have left. Remove the guesswork from your heating with a ready supply of logs.
